Friday Finds

Hi friends! How’s everyone doing today?

Dancing for Donuts | Friday Finds.

I fled LA for the weekend and am currently in the Palm Springs area for some R&R. We found a good deal and the next few weeks are going to be a bit hectic, so we figured why not! You only live once, right?! 🙂

Here’s what I’ve been reading this week:

7 Healthy Dinner Ideas for When You’re Broke & Just Can’t – We all know I’m really just a broke college student at heart.

How to Love Veggies – Because sometimes the salad thing gets old, y’know?

8 Habits that are Keeping You from Saving – Beyond guilty of #8 (and some others…oops).

A Beginner’s Guide to Seasonal Eating – So much prettier, and healthier, and cheaper. Win-win, y’all.

3 Mantras to Live By (For More Happiness + Peace) – I think we all could use these right now.

Turkey Chili Stuffed Acorn Squash – Stop. It. Now. I need this asap, preferably by a fire and possibly under a blanket (although not in this desert heat, obvs).

Hope you have some time to hit the re-set button this weekend too, no matter where you are!

Friday Finds.

Hi friends!

Dancing for Donuts | Friday Finds.

This week absolutely flew by, didn’t it? I think that may have been because I spent half of every day reading and watching the news hoping they would find some answers about what happened in Vegas last weekend. I actually just want to say something quick here, aside from how absolutely horrifying the attack was – just one week before, I had actually been at a music festival on the same fairgrounds as the shooting, and stayed right at the Mandalay Bay, too. I’ve been extra upset about it, just because of this and how my memories on that field are so different from all of the people involved last weekend and to be honest, I feel a bit guilty about it. Like maybe I shouldn’t have had such a great time there, because only one week later it would be the sight of something so awful.

But there’s really no point in feeling that way, because what we really need to do, aside from sending love and light to all of the victims and their families, is to understand what needs to happen to prevent this in the future. We have had far too many incidences like this to continue on the path this country has been. And on a more granular level, can we all just be a bit kinder to one another? I think that may do some good, as well.

Okay, on a lighter note – here’s what I’ve been reading (other than CNN), and I hope you have a weekend filled with people you love. Hug them a little tighter, okay?

How to Help the Victims of the Vegas Shooting – Call your reps.

Whatever You Fancy Fruit Crumble – Swear I’m making these this weekend with mixed fruit omg.

8 Snacks to Stop Buying and Start Making – Healthier, cheaper, and probably more fun.

Nourishing Fall Power Salad – Now THIS is a salad I could get on board with daily.

3-Ingredient Lunches Perfect for Lazy Days – Wait, how have I not thought of these?!

The Best Things About Being in Your Late 20’s – SO true, I love this!!

The One Baking Ingredient You Should Never Splurge On – Since holiday baking is coming up and I need to save my ca$h for gifts, y’know?

I think I was just impatiently awaiting this weekend, I’ll be in Vegas for the I Heart Radio Music Festival and I am PUMPED. I’ve never actually been to Vegas to like, do Vegas, you know? I’ve only been for work or with family, so we’ll see…hopefully things don’t get too rowdy since we all know I’m about 80 years old at heart 😉

In any case, here’s what I’ve been reading this week!

8 Things You’re Spending to Much Money On – Guilty of at least one or two of these…oops.

5 Detox Practices You Can Do Everyday – Well this should come in handy after Vegas this weekend 😉

Pumpkin Gnocchi with Sage Butter – Literally drooling rn.

9 Genius Meal Prep Ideas – I seriously need to get back on the meal prep wagon.

Skinny Baked Apples – The perfect fall treat to quell a raging sweet tooth, that’s for sure.

28 Lessons in 28 Years.

Hi friends!

Dancing for Donuts | 28 Lessons in 28 Years.

So tomorrow is my birthday and I wanted to share some of the wisdom I’ve learned in the past 28 years of my life. I jotted these lessons down partly for me (because practicing gratitude instantly makes me feel a bit better when I’m not feeling myself) and partly for you in hopes that maybe you’ll learn something, too!

1. You’re never going to be this young or free ever again so you might as well do some crazy sh*t. Heck, why not move across the country to a city where you know maybe just one person and follow your freakin’ dreams 😉

2. Moving far away may make relationships harder, but the ones who are worth it will reciprocate the effort. It’s a two way street, y’all.

3. It really does get better. Not everyday is going to be rainbows and unicorns, but know when to wallow and when to rise up. The lows make the highs even better 🙂

4. The best investment you can make is in yourself. Attend the school/conference/event that will teach you more about what you’re passionate about and if you need to take a loan out, you’ll make it work and pay it back. Knowledge isn’t free!

5. The money will come. Sometimes (most of the time) you have to pay your dues. Take these moments as learning experiences and don’t worry about the paycheck yet. That being said, no when to say enough is enough. You have value and deserve to be paid for your contributions and hard work.

6. You’ll never regret a trip you took. Travel while you can, and while you have minimal responsibilities (aka no kids!).

7.. Family is #1. Hands down, always. And if you’re not close with yours, find friends that become your family instead.

8. There’s nothing better than having good friends and a support system in life so treat relationships like they’re solid gold.

9. That being said, say goodbye to relationships that don’t serve you, lift you up, or make you smile. Not every moment can be perfect, but the highs should by far outweigh the lows.

10. Kindness. Is. Everything. I promise that nothing will get you farther in life than being a kind person.

11. Do favors. People notice and karma exists.

12. Others may be lucky, but working hard for what you want is far more important in the long run when it comes to gratitude and character.

13. Everything happens for a reason (and I so, so strongly believe that!). The job you didn’t get, the breakup you had to endure, the hardships. They teach you things so keep an eye out for the lesson and remember it in the future.

14. Treat your body like the friggin’ temple it is. Stretch, move, fuel it with goodness and love it for all it’s capable of.

15. Save when you can. You’ll be glad when you have money for a “rainy day.”

16. Women are so capable of becoming anything they want to be. Be independent, be strong and be a role model. Girls need more of those in this world (and I’m thankful I had mine!)

17. Your home should be your oasis, the place you come home to after a long and crazy day and instantly makes you feel comfortable.

18. The small things are often the big things. Don’t take small moments for granted.

19. Celebrate every single victory, no matter how small. You are accomplishing things and growing every single day and nothing is more motivating than stopping to recognize that.

20. You and your needs come first every single time. Give yourself time to rest and learn when to say no (and when to say yes!).

21. Treat yourself! What’s the point of living if you can’t indulge in the things you love?

22. If it doesn’t make you happy then let it go – the job, the boyfriend, the whatever-it-is that’s holding you back. You deserve happiness and life’s too short to hold on to things that make you miserable or bring you down.

23. Don’t wait for things to come to you. Work hard, manifest what you want in life, and ask for it when you can.

24. Stop talking sh*t about people. I’m so guilty of this I’ll be honest, but when I think about it, what’s the point?! It doesn’t help me in anyway, or them. If people want to be crappy, that’s their prerogative. Avoid them at all costs, but don’t waste your breath or brain capacity thinking about them.

25. Confidence will get you far. It probably won’t come instantly, and it’s definitely easier said than done, but find the things you love about yourself and focus on those. People will instantly be drawn to you and you’ll find yourself rocking interviews, dates, friendships, and being happier overall.

26. Don’t let people pressure you into doing, saying or thinking anything you don’t want to. If they’re going to judge you for not drinking, smoking, going somewhere, or doing something, it’s their problem not yours.

27. You have to have to HAVE to follow your dreams and take whatever path you think it is that you’re meant to take. If life doesn’t turn out how you planned so be it, you’ll pivot and find another path, but if you don’t try you’ll never know.

28. Don’t forget to laugh. Having a sense of humor (& humility) makes the tough stuff so much easier to handle and life a bit easier to get through 🙂

Friday Finds.

Man have I been all over the place this week.

Dancing for Donuts | Friday Finds.

I seriously need this mug ^

I’m in the middle of move, while partially staying with my cousin in West Hollywood, working on a ton of blog content for you guys, getting ready to celebrate my birthday, and go on vacation. And let me tell you, that vacation could not come at a better time! I seriously think reading blogs is one of my favorite ways to de-stress, though. It kind of always has been 🙂 Here’s what I’ve been reading this week…

Good Digestion Smoothie – I seriously need to start adding herbs like mint and basil to my smoothies. Do y’all ever do that?!

Trail Mix Coconut Butter Cups – These are so beautiful!!! I’ve never made coconut butter before, but I’ve been seeing so many recipes with it…need to get on that stat!

5 Make-Ahead Salad Hacks – You know me, all about those meal-prepped lunches. So much cheaper and healthier than what you can buy on a lunch break!

8 Ways to Help After Charlottesville – Because hearts are breaking all across this country and it is unacceptable. Let’s educate ourselves and make a change.

4 Ways to Make Your Natural Deodorant Work Better – I can attest to these since I successfully switched over to natural deodorant! S/o to Schmidt’s Lavender & Sage!

Hope you find time to unwind and hit the re-set button this weekend!!!

Balancing a Healthy Life with a Fun One.

Wanna hear something hilarious?

DSC_0397 (1)

I used to be one of those people who was like, “I’m sooooo lucky, I never get hungover! Isn’t that crazy!?” And now? I literally want to roll my eyes so hard at 22-year old me because WOW. I mean, if you’re in you’re early 20’s and you read that sentence saying “OMG same!” then that is fantastic and live your bliss, girl. However, I have a feeling that is not the case for most of y’all.

These days, I avoid sugary cocktails and white wine like the plague if I’m planning on having more than one drink because if I don’t, I will literally be a useless human the day after. That being said though, I still want to live my life, especially since I don’t have the free time to do so very often anyway. If you read one of my latest posts, I’m actually making a conscious effort to say yes more to hanging out with friends and trying new restaurants or bars, while worrying less about how these things will derail my health goals.

Dancing for Donuts | Balancing a Healthy Life with a Fun One.

Here’s the truth, though: you CAN do both! As in, live your life and have a few drinks, but also still be a health-conscious, active person. Maybe not like, every single day, but everything in moderation, right? I’ll give you an example. Friday night I went out to a comedy show in West Hollywood with my cousin and there was a two drink minimum. Since I had a fitness event on Saturday that I really wanted to enjoy, I chose to go with club soda. On Saturday night however, I wanted nothing more than to drink some wine on the beach at sunset, so I freakin’ did it. And you know what? I’m still here, getting sh*t done on a Sunday after a morning workout, and I probably weigh (and look) exactly the same. Nuts, right?! *catch the sarcasm*

I know it’s not easy, but there are some things you can do to make it easier to complete your workout the day after you go out with your friends. I’m currently working out with Aaptiv, an audio fitness app that allows you to participate in guided workouts of your choice, to show you some easy ways you can feel your best and get moving, even if it’s just for 10 minutes! Trust me, you will feel better once you sweat it out a little 😉

Dancing for Donuts | Balancing a Social Life with a Healthy Life.

With they’re help, I’m sharing this infographic with you so that you can make sure you’re checking the boxes before and during your workout. Staying hydrated, having a nutritious snack, taking it slow, and hanging in there as long as you can without risking injury are so important. Again, if all you can give is 10 minutes, and all you have energy for is a quick power walk, so be it! What’s really important is that you’re helping your body recover without pushing yourself too hard.

What I love about Aaptiv is that you can choose literally anything you feel like doing and there is someone there to guide you through it. There’s yoga, running, HIIT and toning workouts, but also “classes” for machines like the elliptical and stairmaster (my favorite!!). I often get bored of doing the same things a few days a week at my gym, but Aaptiv makes it easy to switch things up there, or anywhere. Each workout is a different length too, so you can workout as hard and as long as you’d like.

Dancing for Donuts | Balancing a Healthy Life with a Fun One.

If you head over to their website, you can sign up for a free one-month trial, and then it’s just $9.99 from there on out, which is waaaaay cheaper than studio classes! Aaptiv was generous enough to share a free 30-day code for me and my readers, as well, so you’ll actually get two whole months for free! Just enter the code BURPEES at checkout and you’re good to go. Download the app and let me know which workouts you’re going to try! I’ve been eyeing the Abs Intensive and a few of the 7-minute HITT workouts.

Have a great week, friends 🙂

Saying Yes to the Big Things.

I don’t think many of you know this, but for about 5 straight years of my life, I worked almost every single weekend night.

Dancing for Donuts | Saying Yes to the Big Things.

It actually kind of started during my senior year of college when I’d decided to move to Los Angeles. I knew I needed to save money for my move, so I got a job hostessing on Friday nights at a restaurant in Manhattan. When I moved here to LA, my main sources of income were nannying and hostessing, as well, so that I would have time to audition during weekdays (and the funds to actually keep a roof over my head/food in my fridge). Between those two jobs, I worked every single Friday and Saturday night, and most Sunday nights as well, which meant saying no to having a life like most people in their early 20’s. Part of that, I’ll be honest, was due to me being a little too anal about saving money, but in my defense I wanted to save for rainy days or when gigs were few and far between…

Dancing for Donuts | Saying Yes to the Big Things.

That’s not the point of this post, though. The point is to tell you that the other day I was listening to one of my new favorite podcasts The Goal Digger and she was talking about how to graciously say no to things, people, events, etc. that don’t serve you. She also said that while you can’t say yes to everything (for your own mind and heart’s sake) you should absolutely say yes to the big things. What I took away from that is actually something I’ve been thinking about, and trying to do, for quite some time now.

Dancing for Donuts | Saying Yes to the Big Things.

I’ve spent more money on travel, food and drinks, adventures, and gas money to visit my friends in the past year than I ever have before. I’m probably making slightly more money as well, but the real reason is that I’m tired of not living my life. Our time on this planet is waaaaay to short to not try the restaurant we’ve been dying to eat at, visit the countries on our travel bucket lists, to let important relationships fade (or not create new ones), to miss out on events or trips we know will be a blast. For the first time in my life, I’m finally loosening up the purse strings, (as my mother would say) and enjoying life.

Dancing for Donuts | Saying Yes to the Big Things.

You will never regret a trip you took, or a weekend you spent creating memories with new friends in a new city, of that I can promise you. I went to my first multi-day music festival last weekend and it’s safe to say that my tired feet and slightly unsettled stomach from the fried food were absolutely worth it. And I don’t just mean the money, I mean the time and energy, too. I’m still exhausted 2 days later, but I’m going to have the memories of bobbing up and down to the Killers with my boyfriend, grabbing the best tacos I’ve ever eaten at midnight, and watching a new band (that I now love!) from backstage, for as long as my memory holds up.

Dancing for Donuts | Saying Yes to the Big Things.

So for all of you babes on a budget out there, and those of you who may not be fully living because you’re afraid of the calories in a cocktail, and even for those of you who feel like you don’t look as good in your outfit as you wanted to, find something better to spend your time thinking about. Because none of those things are worth missing out on your life.

Friday Finds.

Hi Beautiful People!

Dancing for Donuts | Friday Finds.

I’m so sorry I haven’t posted a recipe in awhile, I have been traveling on the weekends and short on time, so the meals I’m prepping for the week have been pretty bland! Think basic quinoa with a bunch of raw veggies topped with 2 huge spoonfuls of hummus (yep, that’s been my lunch every. single. day). I promise I’ll be back next week with a new recipe (the carrot cookies most likely, since everyone has been requesting those!), but in the meantime I’m back with my usual Friday Finds from Chicago! I’m here for my very first music festival and am slightly nervous but also very, very excited. Let me know if you’ll be there, too!

What Our Nutritionist Eats in a Week – Totally stealing some of these ideas like the chocolate almond butter overnight oats and jicama sticks for a snack!

Italian Sausage and Veggie Bowls – I usually meal-prep my standard quinoa and veggies, but it gets old! Definitely hoping to try these next week.

Vegan Blueberry Shake – I’m clearly not vegan but hot damn this sounds good!!!

10 Grocery Store Shortcuts that are Cheaper than Doing it Yourself – An incredibly important list to have on hand! Thank goodness for Trader Joe’s, #amiright?

Extreme Money-Saving Tips of Extremely Frugal People (that You Can Use!) – Guys I totally wash my ziploc bags so I can re-use them…it’s great.

Double Chocolate Zucchini Cookies with Sea Salt – Pretty sure I share a recipe from this blog every single week because she is a cooking and baking GENIUS.

Enjoy your weekend 🙂
