This week kind of flew by for me, I think because catching up after being out on vacation made things busier than usual! August Favorites.

It’s that time again, folks!

FullSizeRender

Another month has come and gone, and fall is almost here. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited…

Until then though, I’ll be eating some of these insanely delicious things I’ve come across this month! Most of them are linked at the bottom of this post, unless the brands are hyper-linked 🙂

Dancing for Donuts | August Favorites.

FitJoy Protein Bars – Ok so I tried one of these after a free fitness class at Athleta where they just had them sitting on the counter for free, so like…of course I took one. You know me, I loooooove bars, but because I’ve had so many, I’m a tad critical. After literally one bite of this Birthday Cake one, I was in LOVE. I wasn’t even going to have the entire thing at first, just a nibble, but it was so freakin’ tasty I couldn’t stop. It was the perfect texture, a bit crunchy but also smooth and not too sweet but the flavor was on point! Not artificial tasting or anything like that. Highly recommended!!

Dancing for Donuts | August Favorites.

Kiwami Greens – I’m not sure if you caught my post on Kiwami last week, but I’m kind of obsessed. I’ve been having one of these packets with almond milk (or in a smoothie) almost every single afternoon as a little pick me up since it’s got matcha and greens, PLUS it actually tastes good. That’s a win in my book!

IMG_2820

Justin’s Single Serving Nut Butter Packs – Are you sensing a trend here? I’m kind of in love with any healthy snacks I can bring in my lunch bag. I found these packs on sale this week (I honestly can’t remember where…maybe Ralph’s?) and picked out three different flavors. If I’m being totally honest, I’ve been eating the nut butter straight out of the pack like a complete savage, like not even putting it on fruit or anything, so I’m sure that’s quite a sight. Good think I don’t share an office with anyone most days…haha. The vanilla and maple almond butter packs are my favorite so far!

Dancing for Donuts | August Favorites.

Nekter Skinny Turmeric Lemonade – If you don’t have a Nekter juice bar near you then I’m sorry for this, but I think their turmeric lemonade may be the most delicious drink I’ve had in quite awhile, not to mention that I actually felt good about myself while I was drinking it. It’s got just a hint of the turmeric flavor, so nothing too overpowering, and a ton of lemon. It was slightly sweet, but just enough to cut the sourness of the lemons. I’m seriously trying to figure out a way to make this stuff at home. It was to die for!

Dancing for Donuts | August Favorites.

GoMacro Bars – I know, I know, another stinkin’ bar. I can’t help it! I like to try them all and these were on sale at Whole Foods (you know if I see a sale sign I cannot resist!). I tried both of these flavors and was amazed at how good they tasted. I love that they’re a touch moist (overly dry bars are gross, right?!) but also crunchy. I think what I love about these, aside from the amazing flavor, is that they actually kept me full for more than just an hour or so. Even though the bar itself isn’t huge, it’s bigger than many others and is packed with superfoods that satisfy hunger but also provide healthy fuel. Can’t wait to try the other flavors they have!

What have you tried this month and loved?! Let me know in the comments 🙂

My Workout Essentials [+ Why I Always Keep a Water Bottle Handy!]

This post is sponsored by my friends over at FIJI Water, but the content and opinions expressed here are my own, as always!

Dancing for Donuts | My Workout Essentials [ + Why I Always Have a Bottle of Water Handy]

Happy Monday Friends!

This past weekend was packed with lots of birthday celebrating, moving out of my apartment, and hiking. It was definitely busy, but an incredibly productive and fun weekend! I don’t know if you’re in the LA area, but we’re supposed to be experiencing a heat wave starting tomorrow and I’m not exactly looking forward to it…extreme heat makes me want to sit on the couch in my underwear eating frozen grapes, aka the opposite of getting a workout in! I think what a lot of people forget too, is how important it is to drink extra water during hot days since we’re sweating so much more. I know I do!

Dancing for Donuts | My Workout Essentials [ + Why I Always Have a Bottle of Water Handy]

If you know me at all, you know I always have water with me. It’s actually kind of a savior when I’m just sitting at my desk because it helps keep me from mindlessly eating, and even more so when I’m at the gym. I grew up not drinking very much of the stuff, and my mom doesn’t actually have water with her when she works out, but I could literally drink 2 giant bottles during my hour workout!

Dancing for Donuts | My Workout Essentials [ + Why I Always Have a Bottle of Water Handy]

As much as I love (and use) my reusable water bottle, I don’t always have access to clean water or a purifying filter. For this reason, I love having bottle of water in the fridge for when I know I won’t be near fresh water (like on a hike!). Lately, I’ve been looooving FIJI Water. I don’t know what it is about it, but I swear this stuff tastes smoother than anything else. Do you know what I mean? It’s so hard to describe, but it’s crisp and soft, which makes it extra refreshing in the summer.

Dancing for Donuts | My Workout Essentials [ + Why I Always Have a Bottle of Water Handy]

So with that, here’s what I always keep in my gym bag always for a workout sesh…and I think we can all guess what’s #1 😉

1. Water bottle: Not only is staying hydrated important for healthy skin, faster metabolism, and better digestion, it also makes sure your body is working at its optimal level and is essential for your health. I’m absolutely loving FIJI Water lately since it is has 100% naturally-occurring electrolytes too, which helps replenish those lost during sweaty workouts!

2. Cute (and supportive!) workout gear: I honestly can’t think of anything more motivating that a good freakin’ piece of workout gear. I love cute activewear pieces just as much as the next person, but what’s really important is having gear that isn’t going to be uncomfortable or distract you from your workout. Pulling up saggy leggings or pulling down a sports bra that likes to sneak up is pretty much the worst #amirite?

3. Preworkout snack: I know they say fasting before a workout can help burn fat, but homegirl over here isn’t going to make it 10 minutes into my cardio without my stomach growling if I don’t eat before I leave the house. I love to snack on something small but packed with protein to keep me going as long as I need to like a banana with peanut butter (those little to-go packs are great to keep in your bag!) or a bar that has 5g or less of sugar and minimal ingredients! Anything you can’t pronounce is a no go, duhhhhh.

4. Charged phone + headphones: Music while working out is a MUST. I swear the best workouts I’ve had were because I was listening to motivating music that kept me going. Sometimes it even makes me want to workout longer just so I can keep listening, and audiobooks or podcasts make great hiking companions, too!

5. Backpack: I swear by those little backpacks that have the drawstrings because they’re small enough to stash next to whatever machine you’re working out on, but big enough to hold all my stuff. If you’re hiking, they’re perfect too since they’re out of your way without weighing you down!

Dancing for Donuts | My Workout Essentials [ + Why I Always Have a Bottle of Water Handy]

With FIJI’s home delivery service (available in the continental U.S.) I never have to worry about not having water on hand, especially since it can be extra heavy to carry cases of water from the store up to my apartment! You can choose from 5 different sizes too (I went with 500mL because it fits easily in my gym backpack!) and even create a subscription so you don’t have to think about re-ordering before or when you run out! Convenient AF.

Dancing for Donuts | My Workout Essentials [ + Why I Always Have a Bottle of Water Handy]

If you’d like to learn more about FIJI Water (which is filtered by volcanic rock – how COOL is that?!) and their home delivery service, you can visit their website here. Now tell me – what do you keep in your gym bag?!

28 Lessons in 28 Years.

Hi friends!

Dancing for Donuts | 28 Lessons in 28 Years.

So tomorrow is my birthday and I wanted to share some of the wisdom I’ve learned in the past 28 years of my life. I jotted these lessons down partly for me (because practicing gratitude instantly makes me feel a bit better when I’m not feeling myself) and partly for you in hopes that maybe you’ll learn something, too!

1. You’re never going to be this young or free ever again so you might as well do some crazy sh*t. Heck, why not move across the country to a city where you know maybe just one person and follow your freakin’ dreams 😉

2. Moving far away may make relationships harder, but the ones who are worth it will reciprocate the effort. It’s a two way street, y’all.

3. It really does get better. Not everyday is going to be rainbows and unicorns, but know when to wallow and when to rise up. The lows make the highs even better 🙂

4. The best investment you can make is in yourself. Attend the school/conference/event that will teach you more about what you’re passionate about and if you need to take a loan out, you’ll make it work and pay it back. Knowledge isn’t free!

5. The money will come. Sometimes (most of the time) you have to pay your dues. Take these moments as learning experiences and don’t worry about the paycheck yet. That being said, no when to say enough is enough. You have value and deserve to be paid for your contributions and hard work.

6. You’ll never regret a trip you took. Travel while you can, and while you have minimal responsibilities (aka no kids!).

7.. Family is #1. Hands down, always. And if you’re not close with yours, find friends that become your family instead.

8. There’s nothing better than having good friends and a support system in life so treat relationships like they’re solid gold.

9. That being said, say goodbye to relationships that don’t serve you, lift you up, or make you smile. Not every moment can be perfect, but the highs should by far outweigh the lows.

10. Kindness. Is. Everything. I promise that nothing will get you farther in life than being a kind person.

11. Do favors. People notice and karma exists.

12. Others may be lucky, but working hard for what you want is far more important in the long run when it comes to gratitude and character.

13. Everything happens for a reason (and I so, so strongly believe that!). The job you didn’t get, the breakup you had to endure, the hardships. They teach you things so keep an eye out for the lesson and remember it in the future.

14. Treat your body like the friggin’ temple it is. Stretch, move, fuel it with goodness and love it for all it’s capable of.

15. Save when you can. You’ll be glad when you have money for a “rainy day.”

16. Women are so capable of becoming anything they want to be. Be independent, be strong and be a role model. Girls need more of those in this world (and I’m thankful I had mine!)

17. Your home should be your oasis, the place you come home to after a long and crazy day and instantly makes you feel comfortable.

18. The small things are often the big things. Don’t take small moments for granted.

19. Celebrate every single victory, no matter how small. You are accomplishing things and growing every single day and nothing is more motivating than stopping to recognize that.

20. You and your needs come first every single time. Give yourself time to rest and learn when to say no (and when to say yes!).

21. Treat yourself! What’s the point of living if you can’t indulge in the things you love?

22. If it doesn’t make you happy then let it go – the job, the boyfriend, the whatever-it-is that’s holding you back. You deserve happiness and life’s too short to hold on to things that make you miserable or bring you down.

23. Don’t wait for things to come to you. Work hard, manifest what you want in life, and ask for it when you can.

24. Stop talking sh*t about people. I’m so guilty of this I’ll be honest, but when I think about it, what’s the point?! It doesn’t help me in anyway, or them. If people want to be crappy, that’s their prerogative. Avoid them at all costs, but don’t waste your breath or brain capacity thinking about them.

25. Confidence will get you far. It probably won’t come instantly, and it’s definitely easier said than done, but find the things you love about yourself and focus on those. People will instantly be drawn to you and you’ll find yourself rocking interviews, dates, friendships, and being happier overall.

26. Don’t let people pressure you into doing, saying or thinking anything you don’t want to. If they’re going to judge you for not drinking, smoking, going somewhere, or doing something, it’s their problem not yours.

27. You have to have to HAVE to follow your dreams and take whatever path you think it is that you’re meant to take. If life doesn’t turn out how you planned so be it, you’ll pivot and find another path, but if you don’t try you’ll never know.

28. Don’t forget to laugh. Having a sense of humor (& humility) makes the tough stuff so much easier to handle and life a bit easier to get through 🙂

Staying Healthy On-the-Go [+ My New Favorite Green Smoothie!]

This post is sponsored by my friends over at Kiwami Greens, but the content and opinions expressed here are my own, as always!

Dancing for Donuts | Staying Healthy On-The-Go with Kiwami Greens.

Does anyone else feel like they’re constantly on the move these days?

A little backstory on me: for 5 years I legitimately ran around like a crazy person, driving all over LA from auditions to work to class. When I started my big girl 9-5 a year ago, I honestly thought it would be easier to manage my health, both mind and body, simply because I’d have more structure to my schedule and I’d be in one place. No more snacking on just energy bars (since they were the only thing that’d stay in my car in the heat all day) and wondering when and where I’d get my next meal from. The truth, though? Sitting at a desk all day means wanting to eat out of boredom, the temptation to eat garbage for lunch since I can go wherever I want, and having less time to make a healthy dinner at night once I’m back from my commute, too.

Dancing for Donuts | Staying Healthy On-The-Go with Kiwami Greens.

That being said though, I’m trying to find healthy habits that work around my schedule since that office life probably isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. But even if you don’t have a desk job, it can be really challenging to make health-conscious decisions if you’re constantly going from place to place. I know as a student, or mom, or any working human for that matter, having something right at your fingertips that’s going to give you natural energy and nutrients is key, and often hard to come by. Enter: ridiculously convenient single-serving packs of Kiwami Greens.

Dancing for Donuts | Staying Healthy On-The-Go with Kiwami Greens.

GUYS. I’m not even kidding when I say this stuff is a game. changer. It’s literally the easiest way to make sure you’re getting your greens in, especially when you need a little boost (helloooo 3pm slump). Inspired by the Japanese tradition known as Aojiru, a nutritional greens blend known for its nutritional properties, Kiwami provides an easy way to reap the benefits of high quality young barley leaf, ashitaba (fiber, beta-carotene, vitamin E, calcium & polyphenols), matcha and sencha. It’s non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free AND has prebiotics, which sustain probiotics. This means that if you’re taking probiotics or eating fermented probiotic foods like Kombucha or kimchi, Kiwami Greens makes these “good bacteria” even more effective and are basically pure gold for your gut.

Dancing for Donuts | Staying Healthy On-The-Go with Kiwami Greens.

Can I tell you the best parts, though? You know what, I’ll just go ahead an list them for you right here…

1. This stuff legitimately tastes AWESOME. If you’re one of those people that loves Starbucks unsweetened matcha lattes, I promise you will love Kiwami Greens too because it literally tastes the same but is sooo much better for you (and cheaper!).

2. You can mix it with water or your favorite milk (I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but I bet it tastes delicious with cashew or coconut milk, too!). This makes it even easier to enjoy since you can literally get water anywhere. If you’re home though, you can totally put it in a smoothie – my recipe can be found below!

3. You can keep it in your purse, at your desk, in your gym bag, wherever since the packets make it easy to take on-the-go and don’t need to be refrigerated.

4. It dissolves sooooo much easier than regular matcha (and doesn’t have that bitter taste!). You know how regular matcha just kind of clumps together and you need that special whisk or a blender to make it blend? Yeah, Kiwami doesn’t need that.

Dancing for Donuts | Staying Healthy On-The-Go with Kiwami Greens.

If you’re one of those people that likes to hide their nutrients in smoothies, I like to blend 1/2 frozen banana with 1 packet of Kiwami, 1 cup kale, 1/4 cup frozen mango and almond milk or water to taste!

If you’d like to try Kiwami Greens for yourself, just head over to their website and use code SUMMER10 for 10% off your order!! Let me know what you guys think, ’cause I’m absolutely in love with this stuff.

Have a great rest of your weekend 🙂

Friday Finds.

Man have I been all over the place this week.

Dancing for Donuts | Friday Finds.

I seriously need this mug ^

I’m in the middle of move, while partially staying with my cousin in West Hollywood, working on a ton of blog content for you guys, getting ready to celebrate my birthday, and go on vacation. And let me tell you, that vacation could not come at a better time! I seriously think reading blogs is one of my favorite ways to de-stress, though. It kind of always has been 🙂 Here’s what I’ve been reading this week…

Good Digestion Smoothie – I seriously need to start adding herbs like mint and basil to my smoothies. Do y’all ever do that?!

Trail Mix Coconut Butter Cups – These are so beautiful!!! I’ve never made coconut butter before, but I’ve been seeing so many recipes with it…need to get on that stat!

5 Make-Ahead Salad Hacks – You know me, all about those meal-prepped lunches. So much cheaper and healthier than what you can buy on a lunch break!

8 Ways to Help After Charlottesville – Because hearts are breaking all across this country and it is unacceptable. Let’s educate ourselves and make a change.

4 Ways to Make Your Natural Deodorant Work Better – I can attest to these since I successfully switched over to natural deodorant! S/o to Schmidt’s Lavender & Sage!

Hope you find time to unwind and hit the re-set button this weekend!!!

5 Recipes to Make Before Summer Ends.

Hi again, friends!

Dancing for Donuts | Peach Caprese Pasta Salad.

I hope y’all are having a wonderful week so far and enjoying the last few weeks of summer! I know I legitimately say this each and every month, but I honestly can’t believe how quickly August is flying by. Fun fact: this is actually my very first summer working a full-time 9-5 job, which I think is making time pass by even faster since summer didn’t feel all that different from spring. Although, that’s partly just an LA weather thing, which I’m fully aware of…haha

Before the season ends though, I’m trying to take advantage of all the wonderful produce summer brings like berries, watermelon, stone fruit and tomatoes. I wanted to share with you a quick round-up of my favorite recipes with these delicious fruits and veggies so that you can enjoy them, too!

Berry Chia Protein Pudding – Make a huge batch and keep it in the fridge for a quick & healthy snack or breakfast!

Dancing for Donuts | Blueberry Banana Baked Oatmeal Cups.

Banana Blueberry Baked Oatmeal Cups – Another amazing make-ahead recipe for babes on budgets & on-the-go!

Dancing for Donuts | Peach Caprese Pasta Salad.

Peach Caprese Pasta Salad – This one’s quite possibly one of my all-time favorite summer recipes! It’s super fresh and only a few ingredients. Perfect for dinner or lunch on a hot summer day 🙂

Dancing for Donuts | Classic Key-Lime Pie.

Classic Key Lime Pie – The perfect mix of sweet and tart, this one’s a crowd-pleaser for sure. Make it for your end-of-summer cookout or to bring to a friend’s house!

Dancing for Donuts | Summer Sips

Sparkling Lemonade – This recipe is super easy, delicious, and just 2 ingredients. Mix your favorite lemonade (I love Hubert’s Diet Strawberry Lemonade!) with sparkling water and you’ve got yourself the perfect summer drink. You could even spike it with vodka if you’re feeling frisky 😉

Alright y’all, that’s it for today! Tell me, what recipes are you planning on making before the summer’s over?!

Carrot-Apple Spice Breakfast Cookies.

I’m switching things up this Friday and sharing one of my new favorite recipes!

Dancing for Donuts | Carrot-Apple Spice Cookies.

Here’s the thing about me – I’m pretty much always craving something sweet. All of my closest friends know me as a dessert fiend, which probably isn’t great since most of the desserts I love (cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, donuts, etc.) are filled with not-so-great-for-you ingredients. That being said, I’ve been trying to lower the sugar in my everyday eating (save for natural sugars from fruit), especially during breakfast! As much as I love the sound of starting my day with a huge stack of pancakes (unless they’re these),or sugar-filled smoothie bowl, it’s probably not going to give me the sustained energy I need to get through my busy morning.

Dancing for Donuts | Carrot-Apple Spice Cookies.

Enter: the breakfast cookie. Now this recipe isn’t just some imposter parading around as “healthy” when really it’s filled with sugar and chocolate. These carrot-apple spice cookies legitimately are packed with protein, fiber, vitamins and healthy fats, aka the nutrients your body needs to function. That being said, they don’t even taste that healthy…like, you know that weird taste when baked goods have too much greek yogurt instead of oil? Yeah.

Dancing for Donuts | Carrot-Apple Spice Cookies.

What I love about these cookies is that they’re moist (ugh, sorry I know everyone hates that word) from the carrots and apple, and genuinely substantial. You can think of them as oatmeal really, just baked and in tiny servings 🙂 The best part about cookies, too, is that you can take them on the go, which is essential for us busy babes. I keep them in the fridge and take 2-3 to snack on during the workday. That’s probably too many, but whatever, it’s way better than eating on processed food or snacks, and you know exactly what’s in them.

Dancing for Donuts | Carrot-Apple Spice Cookies.

I based my carrot-apple cookies on this recipe and used only coconut oil (no butter). These are 100% gluten-free as long as you use gluten-free oats, and if you wanted to make them vegan, you could use a chia or flax egg! Don’t be scared by all the ingredients below, this is one of the easiest recipes for a baked good I’ve ever seen. If you want to make your life even easier, use a food processor and pulse your carrots and apples in there a couple of times. Then you pretty much throw everything in a couple bowls and call it a day. You know me, I like to keep things efficient!

Dancing for Donuts | Carrot-Apple Spice Cookies.

Carrot-Apple Spiced Breakfast Cookies

2 1/4 cups rolled oats

1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour if you’re gluten-free!)

1/2 cup ground flaxseed

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp sea salt

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 large egg

1/2 cup maple syrup or honey

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup coconut oil

1 cup grated carrot

1 cup grated or finely diced apple (I used a Fuji!)

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit and spray or coat a baking sheet with coconut oil.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients – oats, flour, flaxseed, spices and salt.

3. In a medium bowl, mix together the wet ingredients – applesauce, egg, maple syrup or honey, vanilla, and coconut oil.

4. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients in the large bowl and stir well. Add in the carrot and apple, and mix to combine completely.

5. Spoon the batter onto the baking sheet in about 1 1/2 in size balls. Flatten with your finger or the spoon, as these cookies won’t spread or rise! You can put them very close together on the baking sheet because of this, as well.

6. Bake for 15 minutes and then let cool. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Have a beautiful Friday, friends!!

Friday Finds.

Hi Beautiful People!

Dancing for Donuts | Friday Finds.

I’m so sorry I haven’t posted a recipe in awhile, I have been traveling on the weekends and short on time, so the meals I’m prepping for the week have been pretty bland! Think basic quinoa with a bunch of raw veggies topped with 2 huge spoonfuls of hummus (yep, that’s been my lunch every. single. day). I promise I’ll be back next week with a new recipe (the carrot cookies most likely, since everyone has been requesting those!), but in the meantime I’m back with my usual Friday Finds from Chicago! I’m here for my very first music festival and am slightly nervous but also very, very excited. Let me know if you’ll be there, too!

What Our Nutritionist Eats in a Week – Totally stealing some of these ideas like the chocolate almond butter overnight oats and jicama sticks for a snack!

Italian Sausage and Veggie Bowls – I usually meal-prep my standard quinoa and veggies, but it gets old! Definitely hoping to try these next week.

Vegan Blueberry Shake – I’m clearly not vegan but hot damn this sounds good!!!

10 Grocery Store Shortcuts that are Cheaper than Doing it Yourself – An incredibly important list to have on hand! Thank goodness for Trader Joe’s, #amiright?

Extreme Money-Saving Tips of Extremely Frugal People (that You Can Use!) – Guys I totally wash my ziploc bags so I can re-use them…it’s great.

Double Chocolate Zucchini Cookies with Sea Salt – Pretty sure I share a recipe from this blog every single week because she is a cooking and baking GENIUS.

Enjoy your weekend 🙂
