Hi friends! I’m going to be talking about something a little different on here that’s becoming increasingly more important to me: green beauty!

I honestly was never super into beauty (like makeup, skincare or hair care) until a couple years ago. And now? I’m kind of obsessed. But you know what’s crazy is that there are a lottttt of chemicals in the stuff we generally put on our bodies from everything to soap to deodorant to foundation and hairspray. Luckily, options that are paraben-free and sulfate-free are becoming more and more available, which is amazing!!

I want to share some of my favorite products with you guys because in my opinion, healthy living encompasses everything from what we put IN our bodies to what we put ON them. After all, what goes on our skin ultimately goes into it, anyway.

Green Beauty Favorites – Hair Care

Formulate Shampoo & Conditioner – So this is a new company that I actually had the pleasure of working closely with during the second half of 2018! Formulate makes customized hair care, and I don’t just mean you get to pick your scent and your major hair concern. This stuff is suuuper personalized and you do fill out a pretty in depth (but not too time consuming!) quiz when you start.

They even ask things like your zip code, sensitivity level of your scalp, and what tools or products you use to style your hair. Their products are preservative, paraben, sulfate and cruelty free (YAS), and they have a super easy to use app where you can adjust any of your information/give feedback on your formulas. I also love that they send you a really detailed description of what’s in your products – it’s nice to have that transparency!

Full disclosure, I did have to get my formula re-made three times because the first couple batches were making my hair knotty, but their customer service is SO speedy and they work with their chemists to make sure your formula takes into account all of your feedback. I highly recommend this company and I love what they stand for!

Aquis Leave In Conditioner (from the Prime Starter Kit) – You guys I have been obsessed with this stuff. I color my hair with bleach, so it gets super knotty sometimes and I love spraying this in when I get out of the shower!! The entire starter kit is fantastic, but this bottle and their hair wrap towel are the two things I use the absolute most.

Jason Organic Coconut Oil – Umm please never underestimate the power of an inexpensive, no-frills product! I swear by hair masks and I won’t spend money on anything else but this coconut oil. I’ll rub a bit between my hands and then smooth it into my hair (either on the ends or all over!). About once every two weeks I’ll do this and just put my hair up in braids or a bun, then shower it out after an hour or so. It’s fantastic!

I went to the Tone It Up Love Your Body Series launch event on Tuesday (yes, Karena and Katrina are two of the most beautiful and kind women on the planet!!), had some friends over for dinner (nothing beats ending the day in good company), and made some MAJOR life moves.

I know I’m a few days late, but HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Man, am I ready for 2019 you guys. I took a much needed 2-week break (from life, work, all the things) and while I feel a liiiittle bit behind getting back into things, I feel SO motivated and well-rested.

After spending a week at home in New York, my entire family and boyfriend went to the Bahamas to ring in the new year in Baha Mar! If you’ve never been there, it’s basically three gorgeous hotels rolled into one big resort property with a casino, convention center, pools, beaches, and more. I knew I would have fun going into it, but this place beyondddd exceeded my expectations! We had such a blast and I miss it already!

I won’t blab too much, but here’s a collection of photos I took while we were there! We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar and spent the majority of our time on the property eating their delicious food, soaking up the sun, exploring the grounds and relaxing. They also had an incredible gym that overlooked the property and even had some machines outside. Let me tell ya, those views alone were motivating😍

We were able to watch fireworks on NYE from my parents’ balcony, which was probably the most epic fireworks show I’ve ever seen in my life. They also have a sanctuary with sharks, manta rays and sea turtles, an area where flamingos live, and all the food trucks are actually air streams – it’s SO cool. You can even blend your own daquiri by peddling a bike, but I forgot to take a photo! Here are a bunch of photos I DID take, though…

Life just took over, guys. I’ve also been feeling slightly uninspired, and I think that’s probably just because I’m in that home stretch to my holiday vacation. It’s interesting how much easier it is for me to be open on here than it is on Instagram where I feel like it’s important for me to be positive at all times. Chocolate Almond Butter Protein Fudge

I’m back today with quite possibly the easiest, tastiest chocolate recipe ever! I made this a few weeks ago and put the recipe on Instagram, but I wanted to share it here, as well😊

This recipe combines 6 ingredients to form insanely delicious discs of chocolate that are actually satisfying because of the protein, so the portion control is kind of built right in! I also used silicone baking cups, which I SWEAR by you guys, but you could also totally just use regular muffin cups, Dixie cups, or just make it in one big rectangle and crack into it to make a bark!

Chocolate Almond Butter Protein Fudge

1/8 cup coconut oil

1/8 cup + 1 tbsp coconut butter (or more coconut oil!)

2 tbsp cocoa powder

1/4 cup creamy almond butter <– use code ‘dancingfordonuts’ for 15% off!

1/4 cup chocolate protein powder (I used Tone It Up!)

1 tbsp maple syrup

1. In a microwave safe bowl, melt together the coconut oil and coconut butter.

2. Add the cocoa powder and stir well before adding the creamy nut butter, protein powder and maple syrup.

3. Once completely combined, spoon into silicone baking cups (I did about 1 tbsp each). Refrigerate at least 30 minutes before eating (or freeze for 15) and store in the refrigerator for up to a week!

How I Find Balance During the Holidays

December is HERE and the holiday season is definitely in full force! I’m only in LA for two more weekends before I head home for the holidays, but I can tell you that those are (at least) four JAM packed days of holiday parties.

Instead of preaching on here and telling you to “eat before you go so you can avoid the food” or “limit dessert to one bite,” I’m going to give you the REAL deal, at least from my view. The holidays come ONCE a year, and it’s my faaavorite time of year, no less. Food and drinks bring people together during this time, so you bet your cute booty I’m gonna enjoy myself. I will 100% eat what I want (as long as I know it won’t make my stomach hurt) and accept the fact that hey, my jeans might fit a little tighter come Christmas. But you know what? That’s why leggings and fit n’ flare dresses exist😉

Because this is a “healthy living” blog, and I do try to live a healthy life, I want to tell you how I keep things balanced this time of year. After all, being “healthy” is really all about balance in my opinion. And by that, I essentially just mean tradeoffs. For example, you have a green smoothie in the morning knowing that you might not have as many greens later that day. Or, you’ll absolutely want to stuff your face at the open bar/dinner buffet that work is throwing for everyone that night, so you make sure you just get in a sweat sesh that morning. Easy👏peasy👏

I do NOT believe in limiting myself. I do NOT believe that holiday parties should make me think any harder than I already do about trying to stay on track with my health goals. Because let’s face it, anxiety around eating and drinking during the holiday season just causes mental health issues, which is no bueno either. I WILL try the desserts because they’re my favorite thing ever and yes, I WILL have a glass or two of The Crusher Wines Cabernet Sauvignon because it’s DELICIOUS.

Here are 4 simple ways I like to keep things as balanced as I possibly can during the holiday season:

1. Move my body (preferably with friends!) – I am alwayssss a fan of pairing my fitness with friend time! Classes are usually attended with my workout buddies (hi Pam, Alycia and Audrey!!), and since some of my friends are actually instructors (hi Keely and Lindsay!), going to take their classes really just feels like a fun play date. Since I definitely like to keep up my fitness routine during the holidays, if not amp it up even more so, I’ll make as many of my friend dates include movement as possible! Some of my favorite options: hikes, coffee walks, pilates or barre class, and yoga + smoothie dates! If you work hard, you can play hard😏

2. Indulge! Seriously. – Holiday food and drinks are my favorite, but in moderation! Besides, if I deprive myself, I’m one of those people who will later go HAM either because I feel like I need to “reward” myself or need to shovel it all in at once before it’s too late. I think it’s 110% okay to enjoy the things that make you happy around the holiday season, like a glass of your favorite wine!

3. Opt for lower calorie/lower sugar alcoholic drinks – I usually don’t drink more than a glass of wine a week, but around the holidays? I LOVE to unwind with my boyfriend and best friends over a bottle of wine, my favorite Christmas movie, a candle, and most likely dessert (you know me!). Whether I’m cozied up at home or out at a holiday party, I just try to make sure I’m choosing options that have less sugar like The Crusher Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Red Wine Blend. I won’t lie to you, their Chardonnay is my absolute FAVE, and that’s totally fine too, but I prefer to save my sweet tooth for all the desserts 😉

4. Swap some of my favorite treats for healthier options – You’ll notice the platter pictured in this post does not have cheese on it…like WHAT WHO AM I AND WHERE DID JORDAN GO. I know, I know, cheese is the BEST. I’m so thankful I’m not lactose intolerant #bless. But that being said, I know that I tend to go overboard with the cheese so instead, I opt for things like fresh veggies, fruit, and hummus when I can! Cheese is still a thing for sure, I just try to do it less often.

So those are just four super chill ways I try to keep things 💯 over here during the holiday season. I know it’s not easy – eating healthy in general is stressful and adding a bunch of social gatherings into the mix can really throw us for a loop, but just do your best to have FUN without overthinking it, okay?

I’m SO happy to be talking to Staness Jonekos of Eat Like a Woman on here today. I think you guys are really going to love this one – Staness is all about educating women on how their bodies are different then men’s in terms of health and diet. I actually had the pleasure of working with Staness a couple of years ago when she first launched her bars, shakes and cookies, and reconnecting with her has me so excited. You know how passionate I am about surrounding myself with smart, motivated women like herself!!

In this interview, we talk about how she got started with her Eat Like a Woman book that then became a plant-based nutrition line, why it’s so important that women understand how their needs are unique, and how female bodies are generally neglected from scientific research. You know I love every single person I interview for this series, but this one in particular is the perfect intersection of what I like to talk about on this blog (aka health and wellness!) + female entrepreneurship. Keep reading to learn more about Staness and her incredible company!

Tell us a little bit about Eat Like a Woman! What made you decide to write the original Eat Like a Woman book and then branch out into the food space?

During a TV show pitch session as one of the executive producers for Oprah Winfrey’s first TV network, Oxygen Media, she personally asked me how I was making a difference.  Health was always my passion and she knew there was something out there I should be doing. When Oprah speaks, you listen. I took a hiatus from television and wrote EAT LIKE A WOMAN after I discovered the FDA banned females from clinical research in 1977 until recently.

Women experience heart disease and stress differently than males, and burn carbs and fats differently, as well as metabolize nutrients at a slower rate.  This information inspired me to create a company that manufactures plant-based bars, cookies and shakes designed specially to support a women’s health. 

I truly love that you’re educating women on how their bodies are different from men’s bodies! That’s not something discussed often. Can you give us a quick summary of what women should be paying attention to in terms of their unique health?

Women have very unique life stages (pregnancy/lactation, reproductive years, menopause and beyond) that require specific nutritional support.  Our Life Stage Shakes® honor these requirements, so we can achieve optimal health at each life stage. We all have a healthy weight, we are all different – focus on health, not size!  We are born with BILLIONS more fat cells than males. How we perceive fat in our society does not embrace health for a woman.  

Of course, staying at your healthy weight is important – too much fat isn’t good either, but those curves are there for a reason. Carbs are not bad! In fact, a female’s neurotransmitter health benefits from a balance between protein and carbs.  High protein diets are not the best fit for females. You may drop some weight quickly, but one can get cranky and those pounds will return when the carbs do. The Mediterranean’s figured it out…lean proteins, lots of veggies, grains, olive oil, and some RED WINE!

What’s your favorite part of owning & running Eat Like a Woman?

Discovering new science that included females so we can apply it to our daily life is one of my favorite Eat Like a Woman duties, and creating food products that harness this info so we can achieve optimal health as a woman! Every day I am spreading the word that differences matter, so the new science can help each of us. Medical text books still do not have this new research, so I am committed to sharing it with women so they can demand that future research include women.  

And what’s your least favorite part?

There are a million details to launching a food business – operations, financing, legal,  managing three warehouses, three co-packers where we manufacture our bars, cookies and shakes, a law firm to protect our intellectual property and ensure we follow all of the FDA regulations, raising money so the company grows so we can met our costumers demands, and seeking out new distribution channels.  Until recently I personally handled all of these activities, now we have an amazing team that has joined the ELAW family!

If you had to pick one piece of advice to give to others pursuing their passions, what would it be?

Ask yourself “what do I do every day that I love?” For me, I love to KNOW things.  Researching and writing is like breathing…I have no choice. When I was 6 years old, I found my Mom’s nursing/medical text book and studied every word.  Local kids would come over when they were sick and ask me what was wrong with them—so I started diagnosing my friends. It made perfect sense to write books and launch a disruptive business that can change how we think about nutrition.

Ask yourself: What do YOU do for free daily, because you love it?  When you can answer that question you have found your purpose in life – how YOU will make a difference.  The exact question Oprah asked me years ago.

How do you prioritize time for yourself when you’re super busy with your business? Do you have any de-stressing techniques or self-care routines you can share?

I must confess, launching a start-up is super time consuming.  I need to work on making time for myself and finding balance. The answer – we must all make time for ourselves, me too. De-stressing and self-care is a work in progress for me.  That said, I think ALL women have the same struggle.

What are you excited for in the new year? Are you making any resolutions/goals?

We are officially launching Eat Like a Woman nationally next year. I can’t wait to get out there and share powerful information, and yummy plant-based snacks, that can help women achieve their optimal health. Women have a very different eating journey than men…from body image, to nourishing different life stages, to media pressure to look a certain way…it is time we embrace our differences.  We are ALL EQUAL, but our differences make each of us uniquely beautiful.

Pumpkin Protein Muffins

A new week calls for a new recipe!

This is one I know you’ll love because my boyfriend told me it was a winner😏 I made these Pumpkin Protein Muffins last week because my desire to bake on the daily is in FULL force. I figure, okay so my metabolism and activity level is far lower than they used to be, but I also love food… SO! The resolutions to this are a) exercise better portion control and b) bake things that are better for me. Luckily these muffins don’t taste healthy in the least, though!

Some ways I like to make my treats a touch healthier include using less oil/butter (and subbing in pumpkin/banana instead), using healthier sugar alternatives or less of them altogether (ie. maple syrup, stevia, monk fruit, banana), and adding in some protein for staying power. This recipe does all three!

I actually subbed out part of the flour in this recipe with my Eat Like a Woman Very Vanilla Shake, which is one of my favorite protein powders!! This line was developed with women’s bodies in mind (since our bodies process food and nutrients SO differently!), so this powder has probiotics, plant-based protein (which we absorb more easily), 22 vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and omega 3’s. I promise you I’m not getting paid to post about this, I just truly love it!

With this protein powder, vitamin & fiber rich pumpkin, protein packed greek yogurt and almond flour, and only 2 tablespoons of sweetener, you’ll feel good about snacking on these for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even dessert😊

Pumpkin Protein Muffins

1 cup pumpkin purée

1/2 cup plain greek yogurt (I used 2% fat)

1 egg

1 medium ripe banana, mashed

2 tbsp maple syrup

1 cup oat flour or whole wheat flour

1/2 cup almond flour

1/2 cup ELAW Very Vanilla Life Stage Shake (or your favorite protein powder!)

1 1/2 tbsp pumpkin pie spice

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1-2 pinches of sea salt

cacao nibs (optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.

2. In a large bowl, combine all the wet ingredients including the pumpkin, egg, greek yogurt, maple syrup and banana.

3. In a small bowl, stir together the dry ingredients including the flours, protein powder, spices, sea salt and baking powder.

4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and fold until completely combined. Do not overmix 🙂

5. Using a spoon, fill silicone muffin liners (these are my favorite!) or a greased muffin tin 3/4 of the way full. Top each muffin with cacao nibs if desired. Bake for 20 minutes or until firm to the touch.

Store in the fridge for up to 5 days!
