I just got back from my honeymoon in Italy and it’s safe to say it’s now one of my favorite countries ever.
Deciding on a place to go was tricky – we wanted to find a place neither of us had been to before (which isn’t easy when your partner used to travel for a living!), and originally were thinking of doing Greece *and* Italy. Ultimately though, we decided that it was best to stick with just one country to experience it as fully as possible.
This itinerary is perfect if you’re looking for a little bit of everything, but don’t want to be bouncing around every two days. Why I love it for a honeymoon in particular: it starts off with adventure in the city, provides a relaxing escape in the countryside, and ends with pure romance on the beach.
Here’s how we broke it down:
FLORENCE
We stayed at the Sina Villa Medici Hotel, a 10 minute walk from the heart of Florence and a 3 minute walk to the water.
Day 1: Arrive in Florence in the late afternoon. Explore the city and get dinner.
Day 2: Spend the day visiting museums, wandering the streets, and grabbing exquisite meals.
TUSCANY
We stayed at the Borgo 69 in a large, modern and beautiful villa with 10 total villas on the property plus a large pool and restaurant on-site.
Day 3: Hit any last minute Florence spots in the morning, then head back to the airport to pick up a rental car around noon. Drive the hour (or so) to Tuscany, unpack and relax in the afternoon, and get a nice dinner nearby. *Our villa was in the medieval town of Pozzo della Chiana
Day 4: Day trip to Arezzo (20 minutes from our villa) to wander the town and get lunch in the square. Visit a winery in the afternoon, then get dinner near the villa.
Day 5: Day trip to Cortona (20 or so minutes from our villa) to visit the monastery, explore the town and shop. In the afternoon, get lunch nearby in Umbria and take a break at the Lake. On the way back, visit a winery (we went to Avignonese) and have dinner in a nearby town.
Day 6: Day trip to Siena, the largest of the towns in Tuscany, and visit the square, shops and get lunch. Rest and relax in the afternoon, and get dinner nearby.
AMALFI:
We stayed at Hotel Le Agavi, a 5-star hotel on a cliffside at the edge of Positano. This hotel is the only one in Positano with a private beach.
Day 7: Get breakfast in a nearby town, then drive down to Naples. Drop the rental car by the airport and take a car down to Positano. Rest and unpack, then wander into town for dinner and gelato. *I highly recommend taking a cab to the coast rather than driving – you’ll have very little use for a car once you’re there, the drive can be quite taxing, and parking at the hotels is expensive!
Day 8: Take the ferry to Capri for lunch, shopping and exploring, then head back around 6pm to get dinner back in Positano
Day 9: Rest and relax at the hotel or a nearby beach. Have a slow day to just enjoy, then head into town around 5pm for a sunset boat ride, then drinks and dinner in Positano.
Day 10: Day trip (by cab) to Ravello to explore the villas and gardens, shop, and enjoy lunch. In the late afternoon, get a cab to Naples to spend the night by the airport and of course, get pizza!
Day 11: We left first thing in the morning, but depending on where you live, you can get breakfast in Naples then head to the airport to head back home.
