How We’re Celebrating Valentine’s Day At Home

Happy Valentine’s Day, babes!!❤️

I’ll be honest with you, this holiday has always kind of been whatever to me, whether I’m in a relationship for it or not! I think my favorite way to celebrate is probably just to treat myself and whoever I’m spending it with.

It’s also a excuse to indulge a little – get a mani/pedi, maybe a new outfit, get a present for someone I love, bake a rich dessert, or eat a fancy dinner! That being said, my bf and I have never gone out to celebrate Valentine’s Day, just because all the restaurants are so overcrowded and overpriced. I’m also not a big fan of fixed price menus since you don’t get as many choices!

So, instead, here’s a rundown of how I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day at home! And, luckily my bf doesn’t actually read this, so it’ll still be a surprise to him😉

Dancing for Donuts | Recent Eats (February 2018)

A special, home-cooked dinner. Like I said, we love to cook at home! Since I’m now the one with the flexible schedule, I’m planning on making us a pretty full feast, just for fun! In the past, we’ve had risotto and lamb chops, so something a big more indulgent. I think I’ll continue the trend with this Slow Cooker Beef Ragu with Pappardelle or Shrimp and Bacon Risotto!

And dessert! Last year I made this Dark Chocolate Eclipse Cake and it was SO good. I honestly might just make that (’cause if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it), but I’m also think something like these Brownie Layer Cheesecake parfait things could be cute, maybe with some strawberries on top for festivity🍓

Plus Foot Massages… because I’m not very good at giving full body massages and it’s cheaper than the real thing😂 Not to mention it’s more comfortable and fun to just do it at home! I got this foot scrub and lotion from Barefoot Scientist and I think Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to break them out!

And probably a movie. We don’t actually watch movies all that often, especially if we’re too tired on a weeknight to get through the whole thing, but we do like to curl up on the couch and watch something! Lately we’ve been loving The Good Place and the new season of True Detective.

But then a weekend getaway😍 We found out pretty recently that Alex has President’s Day off work, so we were thinking of heading up to a family friend’s cabin in the mountains tomorrow, but then we found out it’s got no power from all the snow! Instead, we’ll be heading up to the Santa Barbara area for wine tasting for just one night, but I’m so excited! I really just wanted to do something special since we’ve been spending so many weekends huddled up at home. Maybe the rainy season will end soon…

Anyway, that’s about it – I hope you guys have a fun night celebrating!! Even if you’re single or honestly just not even doing anything, take this night to show yourself some love. You deserve it!!!💕💕

Pumpkin Spice Golden Milk Latte

I’m baaaaaack!!!

Dancing for Donuts | Pumpkin Spice Golden Milk Latte - Dairy-free, packed with Fiber & Vitamin C, and the perfect drink for autumn!

Apologies for the brief hiatus – Vegas really took it out of me (not shocking for this grandma-at-heart). It is not feeling anythingggggg like fall here in LA and if you know me at all, you know I get homesick without fail every year at this time. I’m a New Yorker at heart, so of course all I want to do is go apple picking and see the leaves change colors, although from the looks of it, it doesn’t seem as though it’s feeling like fall anywhere on the east coast these days. #globalwarming

But even though I can’t wear my cozy sweaters yet, I’m going to do everything in my power to make this season feel like the one I love so much, and that means starting with PUMPKIN. Please don’t hate me, I know I’m basic as anything sometimes, but there really is just something so comforting about fall spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and nutmeg. I riffed off of these golden milk (aka turmeric) lattes everyone is raving about and added a little fall flare. The combination is UNREAL, if I do say so myself.

I absolutely love sipping on this before bed since it has no caffeine and feels a bit more decadent than tea. You could even add a tablespoon of coconut oil to make it more filling if it’s a morning or afternoon kind of drink, but I like to keep things light around here right before going to sleep! This recipe actually makes 2 servings too, so you can have one at night and then pop the rest in a mason jar for the next day. I actually had my second serving today at work and it made me SO damn happy. It just like, cozied things up a bit, you know?

Another thing to note – this recipe includes real pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling!), which makes this drink super creamy and adds fiber, potassium and vitamin C. Not to mention it also has tryptophan (the stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy after Thanksgiving!), which makes it literally the BEST thing to drink before bed.

Pumpkin Spice Golden Milk Latte

(makes 2 servings)

2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk

2 tbsp canned pumpkin puree

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp pumpkin spice

pinch black pepper (freshly cracked if you can swing it!)

1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey

1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

1. Put almond milk in a saucepan and heat on the stove over low to medium heat. Add the remaining ingredients and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring about every 30 minute or so to make sure the flavors really combine and any clumps of pumpkin puree are broken up.

2. Carefully pour pumpkin spice golden milk into a mug and use a milk frother, if desired. *You can totally just drink this as is too, but if you like that part of lattes best and don’t have a frother, you can even put this in a blender (as long as it’s not too hot!) and blend it up for a sec. I also shook mine in a mason jar for couple of minutes with a strong arm and it had the same effect!

3. Store remaining mix in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Shake before drinking.

Alright y’all, I hope you have a wonderful weekend that’s filled with seemingly fall-ish things, even if it’s 80 degrees where you are, too!!

Meeting Commitment with Self Care.

Oh, hello! I’m so sorry I’ve been pretty MIA lately. Life and work have been a little nuts and the madness threw me off my game.

Dancing for Donuts | Meeting Commitment with Self Care.

That’s actually why I wanted to write this post, to be honest. I feel like my schedule has gotten a little out of hand (as everyone’s can from time to time) and instead of listening to my mind and body, I’ve focused on fulfilling a billion commitments. If you don’t already know, I’ve always been someone who likes to be busy. I genuinely enjoy filling my time with things that make me feel like I’m progressing as a human, whether that’s physically at the gym, financially by working side hustles, or emotionally by spending time with people I love. And, while I absolutely still enjoy those things, I’m starting to realize the importance of quiet and alone time, doing things that are just for me, and making sure I’m taking care of myself.

Dancing for Donuts | Meeting Commitment with Self Care.

This notion of self care has been really trendy lately, and I know it kind of sounds like some b.s., but it’s not. I’m glad it’s becoming more main-stream, and even more acceptable for us to slow things down, if that makes sense. There’s so much in our society that demands us to just go, go, go and I think social media has a lot to do with that today. We’re inundated with images of people traveling the world, going out to eat, and doing all kinds of activities. I think this is so amazing because it inspires us to go out and see the world, but I also think it makes us feel pressure to do as many of those things as we can right now. But we don’t have to do what everyone else is doing, we can do one thing today and one tomorrow, or no things today at all if that’s how we feel. And the concept of self care let’s us step back from this pressure and just chill for hot second.

I was listening to my absolute favorite podcast, Soul on Fire by The Balanced Blonde, and in her most recent episode she interviewed Mary Beth LaRue, a health and wellness expert, yogi, and entrepreneur. Jordan and Mary Beth were talking about how they’re both so busy and so productive, but that it’s important to “meet commitment with self care.” This really resonated with me, particularly this morning, because I just got back from a bachelorette party that I planned (which I had a blast at!) and have also been coming off of some really crazy weeks at work. For the past 7 days I’ve actually had some gnarly stomach issues randomly, as well, and for the life of me couldn’t figure out why. Fortunately, my stomach woes have seemingly come to an end, but it’s kind of strange because pretty much the moment I got home from our trip and the 5 and a half hour car ride back, I started to feel better. How weird is that!?

The only thing I can think of, unless my pains come back of course, is that it was anxiety. I’ve never experienced a reaction like that from stress ever before, but I think it was a sign that I need to slow things down. My dad always tells me “don’t burn yourself out, child” and even though I usually laugh it off and tell him I definitely won’t, I may have just done it.

So, that being said, I’m not entirely sure what the point of this post is, but I do know that taking care of yourself (/myself) needs to be a priority. My advice to you and my future self is to say “yes” to just one less thing, maybe leave half of a day in your planner blank, and don’t be afraid to check out of life for an hour or so every once in awhile.

Have a wonderful week 🙂
